Westcott Jug Suckers (Syracuse, NY)

Helmed by Syracuse music veteran Colin Aberdeen, the band fuses a unique blend of blues, jug band, zydeco and old school rock ‘n roll to create an undeniably fun mix unlike anything you’re likely to find elsewhere.

Noticeable immediately is the lack of a drummer or bassist, two pieces often taken for granted in a blues band nowadays. Instead, the Jug Suckers’ rhythm section consists of a master washboard player, a phrase we music writers don’t get to use nearly enough. The bass guitar, meanwhile, is replaced by an alto sax, adding yet another dimension to the band. The rest of the lineup is filled out by a harmonica, a dobro and mandolin player, and guitarist and singer Colin Aberdeen.

This unusual lineup certainly helps the Wescott Jug Suckers stand out from other acts, but also perfectly suited their musical style. The washboard provides a fittingly simple upbeat percussion for their sound, and the sax gives a New Orleans feel when combined with the bluesy guitar and harmonica.

With the diversity within the ensemble, you certainly don’t find yourself missing the drums or bass guitar.

A mixture of old blues and jug band staples and originals make up their sets and are uniformly well received. Unsurprisingly, the band truly gives off the impression of loving what they do and the people who support them. They fill the sets with amusing banter with fans and give frequent shout-outs to friends in the audience.

With their fun unique style and the carefree atmosphere they’re definitely a band not to miss. Besides, who can turn down a group with a washboard player?
